Hi, I'm Clara. I'm Sophie. And I'm Deirdre. As an smart filmmaker, actress, and musician, we will deep dive into the world of music, movies, books, and everything in between. Welcome to the Geek Yoger Podcast. Hey guys, hey guys! Hello everyone, welcome to this week's episode. We're gonna be talking about music rivalries of the past and feuds and beef and whatnot. We've been doing this episode for quite a while, so it's the last time we finally got around to it. Yes. Um I suppose everyone has a bit to say about different ones, right? Yeah. So we're gonna go the last sixty years, I guess. Because that kind of covers them all. Oh really? Okay. Well, yeah, that covers them all for the couple. What do you have is Beethoven now? Because we're 60 yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, Brenaissance.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so what should we start with? I don't mind. Would you like to do like oldest and then bring oldest? Like chronologically.
SPEAKER_00No, like go decade by decade. Yeah, but like some of the like spans a long time.
SPEAKER_01Alright, well then I'll just go. Yeah, just go. I'll just I'll just start. I'll start with my because I have I have two prepared. One of them is way longer, I'll start with a longer one. Um so it's 1985 now. Um this is about Pink Floyd. Oh um uh Roger Waters and David Gilmour. So Roger Waters was the bassist and David Gilmore was the lead singer. Um but Roger, I'm gonna just refer to them as Roger and David rather than saying the full name everything. Yeah, Roger was a conceptual leader, so he was like more into like the messages and the lyrics and all. But David prioritised music and uh melodic quality, so that sort of led to clashes over this their song arrangements and stuff, and then there was a some large dispute over do you know comfortably numb? Yes, yeah, the mix of that. But anyway, so in 1985, Waters left Pink Floyd, famously calling it a spent force, and he unsuccessfully sued them to prevent the rest of the members from using the name Pink Floyd. Really? Yeah, but he didn't win. I don't really know where he was going with that one, but anyways, so then Gilmore and the drummer Nick continued, and I presume the guitarist as well. Um Sid Sid Barron. Sid Barron. And they continued as Pink Floyd, and Waters was really bitter about this because he thought the band like shouldn't be like continuing without his leadership.
SPEAKER_00Like the band and his own report.
SPEAKER_01And then I think he just expected the others to be like, oh we can't do it without him or do you know there's a one who? Yeah. Can I jump in? Yeah, so Metallica, when they first formed, they had it was formed by Dave Mustaine, right? He like formed Metallica. Yeah, yeah. And then he was the guitarist, I'm pretty sure. Maybe he sang too. Okay, I actually don't know. But it was his band. But then as the band kind of got more recognition, the other members decided to kick him out of the band. Cause I think they just decided they didn't like him or something, and were just like, should we just kick him out? Even though it was his band, what did they mean? But he got kicked out. Then he started another band, Megadeth, and then they were like um Metallica's opponents, and he was really bitter about it for years, but Metallica always did better, so interesting. Back to my story. Um so yeah, so he has left, and then the rest of the band continued to be Pink Floyd. But then in 2005, so 20 years after your man left, they reunited for a one-off gig at the live 8 charity concert in London. But like there was a public hug, but everyone's like, no, they're they're still mad at each other's intentions, or still it's still there, and they never fully reconciled. But then in late 2023, I think the feud reignited yet again, and continues um over political differences um about the Russia and Ukraine war. So I they were both quite vocal on their opposite stances, and the re-release of the album Animals, they didn't agree with that again for I don't know why. Um, and then in late 2025, so this is 40 years after your man's left the band, like it's quite a while now. You think he put it to bed? He stated that there's absolutely no chance of them ever performing together again. Aww. And I quote, and then the last bit of information that I have on it is that Gilmore's wife, Polly, was getting involved and she publicly attacked Waters' character and personality and she was endorsed by um Gilmour. Wow. It's terrible. So that's very dramatic. You know, like I could never hold a grudge for that long. I would literally just not care. Yeah. I don't know, must have been pretty bad. It's like no about her not talking to Liam for like 15 years. Yeah, that's your own brother. Yeah, like what are you doing?
SPEAKER_00Can you imagine being the parents there's like a big thing?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there's more moms.
SPEAKER_00They haven't spoken for like 15 years.
SPEAKER_01I think they're doing well. Yeah, their mom Peggy, she's from um Mayo. Fun fact. Yeah. Right. Who wants to go next?
SPEAKER_00No, we're just gonna.
SPEAKER_01What were you gonna say? I was gonna move on to a completely different topic, so you can say Oasis versus Blur and build off how we've just been talking about.
SPEAKER_00Uh yeah, okay. So it reminds you it reminds us of Oasis versus Blur.
SPEAKER_01Mmm, yes. We have talked about this before.
SPEAKER_00Yes, we have. But uh This is like a crossover.
SPEAKER_01Have we actually talked like about it though? Like what happened?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_01Um no, I don't think in in that we have. Do we know what happened?
SPEAKER_00Not really. Sort of.
SPEAKER_01A bit. Well, what I think was that like most of it was kind of just fuelled by the media.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Especially at the beginning. It was begun by the media, like two bands didn't care about each other. But then I think Damon kind of wanted it to like he was kind of in the competition then, he was like, okay, yeah, let's do it then. So then, like, roll with it in country house. We definitely talked about this before, but whatever. He like pushed up the country house release date to be on the same date as roll with it. And then it was a big like sales competition over the weekend. So then they were nobody like yo, who is this guy? So then they decided they like absolutely hated him. And the rest of history. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Who wait, who won Oasis movie?
SPEAKER_01Blur. Yeah, yeah. The country.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yes. People often say very dramatically, in my opinion, that Blur won the battle, but Oasis won the war. I don't think so. Do you not think so? I think so. Well, maybe, but Oasis like properly made it to like America. That's like the goal. I guess. Blur didn't. Well no, they did. They didn't, and they decided they didn't want to.
unknownI think. That's true.
SPEAKER_01But that was that was probably just an excuse to be like, you know what, let's just let's just hate on America, so we don't need to be successful there. There's so many songs about not liking America. I know. But anyway, Sophie, what else do you have?
SPEAKER_00So I think actually, this actually also relates to the Blur one because isn't Damon Alburn, didn't he like not like Taylor Swift?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he said she didn't write her own songs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think that's actually the start of quite a few um feuds because like a lot of people say they want to write their own songs, but like have they really?
SPEAKER_01Well, Taylor Swift. I think she gets a lot of unnecessary hate.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01The Kanye West thing in 2009.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think so. Wait, let's touch on that then. The Kanye West thing um happened the Grammys in 2009, wasn't it? Yeah, you said that, sorry.
SPEAKER_01No, I didn't I said 2009, I didn't say the Grammys.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so it happened to the Grammys for the female music best video, I think. And then when she was making her speech, um Kanye West kind of he interrupted them at on the stage. Her he interrupted Taylor on the stage because he said that he believed that Beyonce should have won for single ladies.
SPEAKER_01Why would you do that?
SPEAKER_00That's what I mean.
SPEAKER_01No, it was actually so sad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because she was so young as well. Like, wasn't she just new to the industry really?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, or I I really don't like people who like are really into music and they just like hate Taylor Swift for like no reason. So why?
SPEAKER_00There's no need, really.
SPEAKER_01I like Taylor Swift.
SPEAKER_00People who say that can say every single lyric of blind space.
SPEAKER_01I don't like Taylor Swift.
SPEAKER_00I mean that.
SPEAKER_01I I I just think that her her music is just too I don't know how to describe it. It's just like it reminds me of like plastic, but like someone aggressively painted pink on it, and it's just how many songs do you know? Not many, I don't want to know them. Well then you should I think it's so it's so surface level. I think the rule should be that you listen to three albums before you ever hate on the album. Three whole albums.
SPEAKER_00Three whole albums is a bit watched now.
SPEAKER_01I just don't, I just I I don't know. When I was younger, I I did I just I really didn't like her and I think I was probably just like trying to be different. But like now I'm just like oh like every time her song like anything by her comes on, I'm just like turn it off. I really like her song You're on your own kid.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, niche. I think as well, it's because like anytime she releases like a single, it's always played on the radio like the day after, and it's just so and there is a lot of okay.
SPEAKER_01To be fair, I wouldn't hate on her for the musical aspect, but yeah, in how she deals with the amount of money she has, I could understand the chair.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, or the chair.
SPEAKER_01Well, that it's bad because she's like us for like 10-minute journeys and all this, but she can't just walk down the street, like look what happened to John Lennon. You know? Yeah, I suppose. He was also the biggest artist in the world, and it was a fan who killed him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like people are mad, like she can't just walk down the street.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's sad because I think her level of fame, like, shouldn't be no one should be that famous because it's not fair on them either. But like, what can you do?
SPEAKER_00Do you reckon like if her and Travis have a kid, it's gonna be like a real Troy from a high school musical kind of situation?
SPEAKER_01Oh, I don't know. Imagine. Yeah, but speaking of Taylor Swift, I suppose I should mention this, her and Olivia Rodria had some interferences in that. There was the whole thing about deja vu being like cruel summer, which I don't I still don't think they sell. I don't think the bits that they say, I'm like, oh, sort of stretch, but like because uh Wait, like which parts?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm trying to do it. I'm not exactly both. Yeah, the same not working.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't know. Like it's she does say that you know's a really big fan of Taylor Swift and has always been, so like you'd think that oh yeah, well maybe because she even it's if it's subconscious because she's lived in 36 so much that maybe it's come in there. Probably. But um I think she she had to give songwriting credits to Taylor Swift and she got sued and all she lost a lot of money. Yeah, so there's that. And then there's a whole thing about Livia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter. Oh yeah, yeah, actually. That was in 2021 with the like a suspected quote unquote love triangle between the two of them and Joshua Bassett from High School Musical Musical series. Um, and then there people see the whole thing that I found in Research, it was all just fan speculation, like none of it was ever confirmed or mentioned by either of them. So, like Driver's License mentions a blonde girl. There are quite a lot of them in the world. Yeah, like let's just say, um, and then her carp carbon's song Skin is viewed as a a response to that. But again Who do we prepare? Well, you obviously prefer Rodrigo.
SPEAKER_00I don't mind to be honest, I like both of their songs. Same.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But yeah, both artists have dismissed it and then they've I think they've made up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Or appeared to have made up. Like if it was over your man, like they're both past him now, so I don't know. Speaking of Le Rodrigo, actually, what do we think of the new single? It's so good.
SPEAKER_00You've listened to it. I listened to it, yeah, but I was racing the appeal that I was.
SPEAKER_01It does kind of sound like hard to go. Like in a bit like the verse, I think. Hmm.
SPEAKER_00Not really, but I think so. I can see where you're coming from.
SPEAKER_01I kind of thought I did. But I only listened to it like once, and that because someone someone else said that too, and then I was like, yeah. But yeah. No, I I loved it. I loved it so much. I was excited with the new album now. It's gonna be so good. But yes. What else do you guys have, or do you have anything else to say? Well, for some more historical ones. First three of the Beatles versus the Rolling Stones. That's gonna seem as the most famous, but there wasn't any actual like dislike between the two bands, generally. Like that was entirely the media. Yeah. Again. Because they were both kind of the big bands of the 60s.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't know who I'd prefer, actually. Actually, do you know who I prefer rather than the Rolling Stones or the Beatles? Who is it? The Kinks. I think they were the best band of the 60s. I love them. So look unproblematic. And just like there. Actually, not quite unpro unproblematic. I was about to say, like.
SPEAKER_00I was about to say, like, are they really unproblem? I actually have no clue who they are, so you can take us away.
SPEAKER_01The doors, they actually have a bit of a rivalry with the doors briefly, because uh one of the doors songs. I forget which one. Oh, The Smiths and the Cure. I love the Smiths, yay. You what? I love the Smiths at the moment. I love the Smiths. I said I love the Smiths. I actually know what's going on. No! It's it's your one, Love. Oh, I love her. Yeah, no, I haven't seen it that movie. I'm actually I need to watch it. I knew there was one, I forgot. Um, anyways, do we pray the Smiths in the Cure?
SPEAKER_00Um I've listened to the Smiths more, actually, I haven't listened to the Cure. Seriously?
SPEAKER_01The Cure, I know like Friday I'm in love. Just like Hemen and Love Cats, that's it. But like The Smiths, the whole The Queen of Stell album. I've been listening to that at the moment. It pairs very nicely with some some. I feel like there's a limit to how many songs by the Smiths you could listen to them. Yeah. You're just like, oh my god, they're quite good.
SPEAKER_00I remember I was listening to I think I listened to like two albums in a row and then it's just in a row.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no. I I don't know who I'd prefer, honestly. I think I'd de I prefer the vocals from the cure. Because realistically, Mar no, Marcy's a good singer, but his voice gets a bit annoying, you know. It's a bit like whiny, kind of. But like I prefer the guitar, Johnny Moore. I think he's really talented on guitar. You know? Like, I think if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't like this voice at all. I don't think Marcy's vocals would be like enough at all.
SPEAKER_00Oh, really? Whoa.
SPEAKER_01Um, but yeah, they like hate each other. Like Robert Smith said he would like eat extra meat out of spite because Marcy's a vegetarian. That's intense. I know. Um oh Michael Jackson. Oh, this is kind of on theme, the new Michael Jackson movie. Yeah. Michael Jackson versus Prince. Actually, I haven't heard a lot about that.
SPEAKER_00Me neither.
SPEAKER_01They were that was kind of also a media sort of thing. But then there is this one case where Michael Jackson brought Prince on stage, and then Prince tripped over I think a lamp post or something. I don't know. It must have been a property. How did you trip over it on stage? But he he fell and then he thought the whole thing was a set up to like embarrassing. Oh no, I know. But it was because like he was the better entertainer because Michael Jackson could obviously do all his dancing and stuff. Yeah. But Prince played 27 instruments on his first album when he was 20.
SPEAKER_00That's crazy. Can you list all 27?
SPEAKER_01No. Um what else? Do you know Prince was on the episode of New Girl? Have you seen that one yet? No, I there's a whole episode that he's on. Really? He's very famous. Cool.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_01Any any other ones? Um the East West Coast hip hop thing.
SPEAKER_00I know data but like not really.
SPEAKER_01You could date that one if you want.
SPEAKER_00No, no, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_01I don't know much either. It was just Biggie Smalls. Notorious P-I-G. Yeah. And Tupac. They were friends, but then Tupac got like shot or shot at, and um he thought Biggie had like planned it, because Biggie was there or something. But yeah, so then their friendship fell apart and then they hated each other, and then oh, because it was like the East West Coast divide thing, and then they both died within six months, sadly. Both unsolved murders. Wow. Yeah. I think it is it is worth it to say also that a lot of these type of things are PR stunts, yeah, or just made up by the tabloids or by fans. So like you can't believe everything that it's said. Like some of these events that we're talking about may be just completely random or like unrelated. But then there are complete then there are like I think the hypothetical is a bit, I think all that was fairly serious, yeah. Oh yeah, for sure. But like yeah, but they're just media stuff.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but the I seem like Olivia Regigo is really carpenter. Um media.
SPEAKER_01I'd say that's yeah, and fun for sure. Yeah, what what's that about?
SPEAKER_00So I think there was also like not a fight really, but kind of like an argument towards Lady Gaga and Madonna at some point because from the start of Gaga's career she was really she was compared a lot to Madonna and because they kind of well they had like similar not similar similar styles and stuff, but that happened with uh Madonna and Cindy Loffer too. Yeah, but I think it was because she had I can't remember which song, but they had similar chord progressions and then but then Lady Ga was like to be fair, he had like most the it was like you know the chord progressions that are really common? Yeah, you know not. What do you mean? Like no, there's a certain chord progression that has like over 50 songs the same chord progression. Oh I think that's what you mean.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't know what I don't know what it is. It's probably going with like C and G and D.
unknownA.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but something like that, and um Madonna basically accused not accused, but said that Gary was kind of copying her, I think. I think that happened for a lot though, because the Beatles and Oasis. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01People say oasis are just like a Beatles rip-off. Which I don't think is fair to say. Well, no, it's fair to say, but I don't think that's all they are.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I think if you have individuality, I think who you're inspired by. Because like if you didn't have any influence, you couldn't make any music, you know what I mean? Yeah, so everyone has their influences, so I don't think it's fair to like hate someone for that. Yeah. Alright, guys, thanks for listening yet again. Um, we will be back next week, next Tuesday, more pop culture conversation. Yes. Very exciting. Alright, have a nice week. Okay, bye. Bye.
