SPEAKER_00

Welcome to the E Joker Podcast.

SPEAKER_03

Hey guys! Hi! Hello everyone. Today's episode is all about Olivia Rodrigo. Uh famous singer. Yes. Um uh two of the three of us here have been to see her live. Yay! Wait, you have? Yeah. When? I saw her on Marley Park. When last year. Oh, I didn't know that. Yeah. And I saw her in the Three Arena. So I actually love to go to one of her concerts. Yeah, me too. She's going on tour, but she's not coming to Ireland. Yeah. Unfortunately. Everywhere we saw Ireland. Doesn't she have like four dates in the UK? Oh, she added on like an extra one as well. Oh my god. But the people in the US are sort of angry because she's skipping most of the states there as well. I don't actually know where she's going, but I think it's just a lot of nights in the same place. What state is she from? California. She's from California Loving. That's such a good song. Yes. Um yeah, she's pretty on trend at the moment because she's her new album is coming out on June 12th. You Seem Sad. Was it? You seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Very exciting. I was like, I thought you were saying that just like I was hoping. Um she's released one single so far, and by the time it's released, she'll will have released her second, but that hasn't released at the time of recording. But we're still very excited. And that's gonna be called The Cure, the first one is dropped dead. So shall we start with everyone's favourite song by her? Um Vampire. Yeah, it's a good one. It's such a good song.

SPEAKER_00

I just love how it's so like I don't know, it's so satisfying to listen to. Maybe it's because it's like fast-paced.

SPEAKER_02

Hmm.

SPEAKER_00

But it's a good song.

SPEAKER_02

Lacey or Can't Catch Me Now. Is that the one you're gonna do? Yeah, yeah. Okay, I feel like I was trying to remember the ga the name because I got it confused with the other one.

SPEAKER_03

Hmm. They're good ones.

SPEAKER_02

What's your one?

SPEAKER_03

I'd probably say your new one, Drop Dead. I didn't want to. Shout out to whoever agreed with me that it sounded like Chapel Roan. Yeah. I No one else agreed with me, by the way. Everyone was like, no. Everyone was like throwing rocks and stuff at me and being like, You're wrong. No, no, no. They were getting out their like pitchforks and torches when we saw that poem and we were like, oh. Everyone was like, oh. So yeah. Um uh where should we start? Well, I don't know. Why do you like her so much? No, I mean she's I mean she's great. Sorry, that sounded like bad. I mean like what's your fave thing about her? Okay, what a question! Um I don't I don't really know. I mean, I think I started what like I heard Dri when Driver's Air first came out, and I think that is actually one of my least favourite songs by her. Oh, I like remember when that first came out. Yeah. Like how many years ago was that now? 2021. Yeah, so five years ago. Wow. Um I remember when it came out and I didn't really like it. I was just like, oh, it's just the next pop song. But then I saw her in high school musical to musical series, and I was like, oh, she seems pretty cool, I suppose. And I listened to her music and then the rest of the series. I also watched Bizarred Bar. Have you guys seen that? No. It's very good. It's very funny. Um good songs. Uh and then yeah, I sort of listened to all her music and got into it. Because like with me, when I listen to songs, usually I don't well back then anyways, now it's sort of different. I used to just listen to like singles by different people, I wouldn't listen to like an artist as a whole. So she was like the first person that I actually like wanted to see in concert because I knew like all of her songs. Yeah. Because I I liked I liked them all. So that's sort of how that kicked off. But yeah, she started off as a child actress. Yeah. Um and she did like ads and stuff in the States, and then she got a part on Bizard Bark, which really brought her to fame.

SPEAKER_00

Wait, what is that?

SPEAKER_03

It's like uh yeah, it's a like a children's TV show. Oh um, her and her friend, well they became friends on it, Madison Who. Um they do like silly songs and stuff, and Jake Paul is in it. Oh that's how he got his start, I think. Yeah. Oh my god. I know it's so funny. You know what I find so funny?

SPEAKER_00

Like all the child stars who were on like the Disney Challenge channel and stuff.

SPEAKER_03

Such a strange way to grow up though. That's what they all say. Like it's not a great environment from what I've heard.

SPEAKER_02

It's strange how many people like became really famous, like Arena Grande, and even though she wasn't really it wasn't for singing, and then like she obviously grew like singing career.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Like Rugio, Minus Iris, Britney Spears. Britney Spears.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, and you'd wonder what how it kind of like affects you. Yeah. Because a lot of them, like these days, are kind of like you don't really hear much.

SPEAKER_00

Well, not all of them.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, so like Britney Spears are kind of like that a lot. Oh, it's interesting. Um so yeah, that was how she sort of started. And then she really sour in 2021, which was super successful and still is. Yeah, um, especially for someone so young and so new to like making music. Oh yeah, wasn't she like 19? Yeah, that's mad. I think she's even younger than that. I think maybe. Yeah. Wow. Um, and then Ghost came out in 2023? 24? Which is also very big. And now it's a new one, is like everyone's like really anticipating it because it's been a while since she's released anything. Yeah. Um, and sort of the the climax of it, of it all. What's your favourite album? Um like Jesus. Well between the two, probably um, I actually don't know. Because I like sort of half of each, I suppose. Do you know? Like more so. Like this I'm more into like the the faster ones as well. Yeah, I agree with you actually.

SPEAKER_00

I prefer them to like Lacey. Like it's a good song, but I prefer I feel like her voice really suits like fast songs.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but it's like it's it's nice to hear like the contrast as well because like Guts is quite like you have why why is my mind blanking? Like, but you have like fast-paced songs and CSA songs, slow paced songs on Guts as well. So it's nice to hear the contrast of like the two.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, bad idea, right? It's fun. That one Ballad of a Homeschool Girl, getting mask.

SPEAKER_03

Pretty is a pretty pretty embarrassing. Pretty embarrassing. I actually don't like the grudge at all. The what? The grudge. Oh yeah. It's a so forgettable. Oh, and then sour has like those laughing. Oh, like Traitor, traitor's Oh no! I Jojo! Sour, I prefer sour because it's got like traitor, driver's license, deja vu, good for you, jealousy, jealousy, favourite crime. Bangers.

SPEAKER_02

I think in terms of like TikTok trends, like sour is probably more popular, but then Guls is. Like Lacey and Vampire, but like Sour just like it was like everything. Like great times. Yeah, if you see the whole set, like not the set list, the playlist is like driver's license, trader. I can't remember the other ones you said. But like Deja Vu, yeah, not for you. Like for the city. Those are all really popular songs. They were all trends at some point.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Like Jojo C while singing Trader, and then like other things like that.

SPEAKER_03

Right, because that's what the best thing of this album is, Jojo C.

SPEAKER_02

No, no, but like it became like even just like memes from the song as well. You know what I mean? Memes, memes, memes from the song. Why are you bringing up memes? Because it helps the song. Because it like that proves how the popul how the album is popular. Wait, what memes? Just because it has memes that like declared the meme of the words. No, no, no, no, no, no, you don't want to song becomes popular, yeah. Stop and you only like you you associate it with the meme. Like, like a lot of her songs.

SPEAKER_00

Could you just give an example?

SPEAKER_02

Don't just be on the same thing. Like, no, songs like like when things like that happen, like that kind of thing, like she has uh quite a few like of those songs.

SPEAKER_03

That's like like trend and stuff, yeah. Yeah, like the one step forward, three steps back thing.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know what I said, five minutes go. No, it's the meme thing really got me. No, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Hmm.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, no, I get you, I get you. But yeah, so then you should talk about your concert experience. Yeah. Oh yeah, sure. Um, when was it? I went to see her in May. April no April 2024 is when I went. Yeah. And it was in the three arena and I had VIP tickets. Oh. Oh, yeah. So I was in like the pit, like right at the front.

SPEAKER_01

I was just thinking. So you're going to do the R reading. Hello? Okay, I was in the pit, right? I was really oh no. I'm so sorry.

SPEAKER_03

The opener was Remy Wolf. Oh yeah, wow. Who I then went to see that December in concert by herself. She and Matt Bachelman, because I liked her so much. She's great. She's great. That's actually a good recommendation. Listen to her songs. Um, and yeah, she did all the all the classics. I was there with my mum. Aww. What was your favourite one? Um probably uh Teenage Dream. Oh, it was so it was like so sad because she had all the videos of her as a child up on the up on the screen. Um but yeah, that was my first favourite concert that I went to, and it was such like a crazy experience that like I don't know. I mean gorilla's probably came close to living up to it. Maybe gorilla slightly better, but like it was like mad and even afterwards, my mom was like, That's like the best concert I've ever been to. Like she puts on such a good show because she's a great performer.

SPEAKER_00

She's like the she plays guitar and then she dances and stuff.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, the dances were great actually. They did um she plays guitar.

SPEAKER_00

I thought we were just gonna stop there. I was like right.

SPEAKER_03

And she played the piano as well, so there's a lot going on. She's so talented, like yes, honestly. She can sing, dance, piano, guitar. Jesus. Like me.

SPEAKER_01

Well lovely.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Okay. Welcome back from the break. Oh, there's a break. Yeah. Alright, um The Cure is the name of her new single. Uh, which presumably called that um because her this new album isn't mostly allegedly about her breakup with Lewis or Louis Partridge, whatever you want to call them. And so his favourite band he said in an interview once was The Cure. Some people are saying that this song's called The Cure, so every time he like searches up the cure on like Spotify, her song's gonna come up and just annoy him. That's pretty funny. Which I think if that's the case, that's so smart. Yeah. She really likes the cure, doesn't she? Yeah, she performed with Robert Smith at uh Glastonbury last year. Watched it live. It's very good. And then she released her songs from that as an EP.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah, and they sang just like heaven on Friday I'm in love.

SPEAKER_03

It's very nice actually. Yeah. Um she's got a really good voice for like music like that. Yeah. Something about it, I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

Her voice isn't very like typical like pop, you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's like that's a that's the case with a lot of people. Like, have you okay, have you heard that one clip of Benson Boone singing? But if you like close your eyes, and then if you didn't know it was Benson Boone, he sounds like genuinely he sounds like Adele.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, didn't he? I'm serious, like a queen song.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know which one, but it was like really good. Yeah. And then like, well, people like Ray as well, like she's like an opposite. She's like in hip hop industry. I think it's funny how not funny, but interesting how they can like kind of have that kind of variety.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah. I really like Ray. I like how she's bringing back sort of older music as well. Yeah. Yeah, because you like variety, like, there's a lot of singers out there with similar voices and a lot of like auto-tune and stuff. So when someone comes up with something really original, yeah. Like people are drawn to it most of the time. But yeah, speaking of her dating history, we touched on this in an art episode a few weeks ago. Um, she used to date Joshua Bassett and then Louis Portridge. But like the thing about her, and especially a lot of pop stars, there's so much speculation by fans, which I think must be really hard to deal with.

SPEAKER_02

No, I think, yeah, I think it must be hard to deal with, but like, especially if you were like say for example, if I like co-starred on like on a show with somebody, everybody just assumes that the two stars are dating. And then like that kind of that kind of just destroys the friendship a bit, to be honest. Because obviously they'll act more like a PR kind of like because then you like wouldn't want to be seen with them.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah. True. Yeah, I think like especially relationships that are like made because of like for PR that like aren't real, they just like annoy me. Yeah. Like Tom Hiddleston and Taylor Swift. Remember when he was like in the ocean wearing that like I love like Taylor Swift vest? Oh my god. Have you seen that picture? No, no, it's it's terrible. But yeah, something like that. It's just because it's not real, and no, and everyone's aware that it's not real, you know. Sure, like brought him to fame, but like, is it worth it?

SPEAKER_00

And then she had the whole falling out with Sabrina Carpenter.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. But apparently they're friends again. Same thing with Taylor Swift. Mm-hmm. But yeah, she seems like a nice person in general. I mean, I don't know her personally. Alevi Rodriguez. Yeah, yeah. Like she does a lot for charity as well. And she's so young, like, that's why she's done a lot. Do you think she's still gonna be around in like 10, 15 years?

SPEAKER_02

I think she might she be around, but I think she must do that thing where she takes a break for like 10 years and then come back and she'll still be popular.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, she has said that she like prefers songwriting to performing and like she'd happily just write songs. Yeah. Which would be sad because she's a good performer, you know, she's a nice singer and puts on good shows, as we've said.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but I think like the thing with Olivia is that like Olivia, the Olivia, is that like she the first performance she did was in a studio with people that she knew, whereas like it's like probably really different, like with the crowds, because like the crowds can be like different kind of vibes and they'll have different reactions.

SPEAKER_03

There's so much demand as well. Like she's selling out like instantly, like every single time. Like the pressure that will put on Sony compared to doing like a series or Mario. Like, imagine the pressure to release an album, like, especially at that age. And like, because hers they just keep getting better and better and bigger and bigger and bigger. That like, I mean, I myself have massive expectations for this new album coming out next month or whatever. And like so do like, I don't know, millions and millions of people.

SPEAKER_02

Well, my expectations are normal, let's not put any pressure so.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, I'm sure she's very impressed, yeah. Oh, she feels so relieved at the time. Oh yeah, don't worry, don't worry.

SPEAKER_00

Um, no, but yeah, like that's the thing. I feel like when it's sort of that, then you're writing songs, like, and you're just writing it for like, oh, like what are people gonna think of this? Will this be well received?

SPEAKER_03

What will like the company brand or whatever think of this? You know? And it's less just like what you like, which is kind of sad. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But yeah, that's the industry.

SPEAKER_03

It's the way the world. Yeah, do you guys have anything you wanna say? Or add? She reminds me of the colour purple. Like, yeah. It's like her whole thing. Yeah. Is that why your favorite colour is purple? A bit? Oh, you're a purple ozer. Oh, you're a purple ozer. Oh my goodness. Uh yeah, but like that's where it started, but now I just like the color purple. Oh cute. I feel like you don't really see purple stuff that much. Like, what's your average purple object? I thought you were pointing at me and I was like, no. Two purple oh, okay. Purple whiteboard, purple book. Purple that way. Purple flower and a necklace. Purple magazine. Purple C D, probably. Okay, well, whatever. Think of like a conventionally purple thing. Like you just can't. Except like a grape. I was gonna say grape. Um remember when you said we'd call our fans grapes? Oh, raisins.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Do you put raisins in yogurt often? No. No. Then where'd it come from? Oh why are we like naming our fan group? Like it's have you guys seen her movie? No. Is it a movie? The one about sour. No, how did I show a mini torch though? That's so good. I've seen it a few times. And then she released a recording of one of her shows from The Guts Tour on Netflix. I haven't seen that either. Yeah. The movie's really good though. She like drives around like Utah and stuff and just plays her songs. And she plays like Good For You with like a full-on orchestra. Oh. Oh, that's so good. Oh, it's so good. Like with the violins and all. Yeah. Wow. And it's in the middle of the desert.

unknown

It's like yes.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, it's so tough. Imagine going to Coachella. Coachella. I just thought of that because you said middle of the desert. Yeah. Coachella seems a bit like just for influencers now. Yeah. Because it's really expensive to go, isn't it? Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like a couple hundred dollars.

SPEAKER_03

I thought it was like a couple crack. Oh really? Yeah, it's called expensive. And they'll be like, oh, and people just get like paid to go. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_03

Blur played at Coachella like two years ago. Yeah. And it was like such a letdown. I know Damon was not happy.

SPEAKER_01

Nobody knew the player X.

SPEAKER_03

It's like, ah wasn't that the case? Was that at Coachella where Charlie XCX was like, don't get no, that was at a concert. Charlie XCX, I feel like, is actually the exception to what we were saying earlier about overusing autotune. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

She was like um mad at people in the front of the barriers because they didn't know the Apple Dance.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I mean I don't know if I know the Apple Dance or not my.

SPEAKER_02

Well yeah, but like if your front uh barrier at the Charlie X concert, like I'm just gonna go around people like say, do the apple dance, do the apple dance.

SPEAKER_03

Do the roar. Yeah. What would be like your your dream lineup if you could pick like three acts for a festival? That they have to be like going at the minute though, or be able to go.

SPEAKER_02

Wait, so do they have to be alive?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Right, okay.

SPEAKER_03

And like not like super old. Like they could do like a reunion. Sabrina Carpenter. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um then Fontaine's DC.

SPEAKER_03

And wait, but like I'm sure.

SPEAKER_02

But what about like experiencing a Beyonce concert? Beyonce, Sabrina Carpenter.

SPEAKER_03

I'm like any minute now. No, I'm thinking. Oh this is yours. Uh Lou Rodrigo. I'd like to say Blur and Gorillas, but I don't know if that would even be possible. So they have to not be super old. Well, Blur could do another one. I'd probably yeah, I'd probably do Lou Rodrigo, Blur, and someone else.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'll say Beyonce, Sabrina Carpenter, and Olivia Rodrigo, because then like Sabrina Carpenter, Olivier.

SPEAKER_03

Do you guys like Wonder Horse? I don't know who that is. Really? Actually, maybe I'd go with Wonder Horse I like.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know who that is.

SPEAKER_03

Like Teal?

SPEAKER_02

Arizona? Oh I've ha- Oh, I think I know.

SPEAKER_03

I think I do. Well, should we wrap it up there? Yeah, sure. Thanks for listening. Um let us know your concert lineup in the comments. Okay. Thank you. Bye. Adios.
